There are many reasons to choose ASD, but here are our top eight.
1. Well-established in KSA
Founded in 1962, ASD has solidified its reputation as a leading, forward-looking school with a proven track record of success. The American School Dhahran (ASD) is a fully accredited, not-for-profit school offering an American curriculum to culturally diverse students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. We were the first high school to offer an American curriculum in Saudi Arabia (1999) and are considered the leading college-prep American school in the Dhahran area.
2. Internationally recognized and accredited
Ensuring high standards in education is a top priority at ASD and, as such, we ascribe to the process of continuous self-improvement through external evaluation and accreditation. In 1981, ASD (then called Dhahran Academy) became the first school in the Middle East to be accredited by an American accrediting agency (Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools). We are licensed by the Ministry of Education and also accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO).
3. Curriculum choice
In addition to core classes, all elementary students participate in music, physical education, Arabic and art classes. Middle school students may select art, concert band, choir and other electives based on the expertise and experience of our middle school faculty.
At the high school level, we offer three programs of study: the American curriculum (over 60 courses), AP courses and diploma (20 courses), and the IB Diploma Programme (28 courses and 12 certificate courses).
4. Diverse community
ASD staff and students represent more than 50 nationalities, enriching the learning environment and contributing to a truly international perspective. We work together to foster a culture of open-mindedness where everyone’s traditions and heritage are respected.
5. Quality teachers
We recruit some of the best teachers from around the world: experienced, innovative, caring and dynamic. All our teachers are certified and many hold advanced degrees. We recruit teachers predominantly from North America, but also Europe, South Africa and Australia. Although teachers who work internationally can often be transient, our staff stay on average seven or more years.
We also invest in our teachers’ ongoing learning, because we know that the best way to teach is to be a learner too.
6. Excellent facilities
With our purpose-built, state-of-the-art campus, ASD students enjoy facilities that are unmatched in the Eastern Province. With an emphasis on sustainability and environmentally friendly materials, it features outstanding sports facilities, enhanced security, two libraries, numerous learning hubs, labs, breakout spaces and much more.
7. After school activities
Learning doesn’t stop with the last class of the day. A wide variety of after school activities (ASAs) are offered every term to engage students, develop their interests, explore their creativity and learn new skills. We encourage the development of leadership skills and emphasize the importance of giving back.
8. Safe and caring community
ASD is more than a school. It is a family. It is a home. A safe, warm, caring environment that nurtures each and every child through his or her educational journey with us.
